CGI (an abbreviation of Common Gateway Interface) is a specification for transferring information between a World Wide Web server and a CGI program. A CGI program is any program designed to accept and return data that conforms to the CGI specification. CGI programs are the most common way for Web servers to interact dynamically with users.

You can find CGI Center module in cPanel > section Software/Services

cg00

The following pre-installed CGI scripts are available in cPanel:

CGI-Wrapper

The CGI wrapper will allow you to run CGI scripts with your user ID.

You will need to place the CGI Scripts that you want to run with your userid in the directory /home/cpanelusername/public_html/scgi-bin.
Once done, your scripts will be available at http://maindomain.com/scgi-bin/

‘cpanelusername’ and ‘maindomain.com’ should be replaced with the actual cPanel username and primary domain associated with your hosting package.

Random HTML Generator

The random HTML generator picks a string of HTML code from a list and inserts it into an SSI (Server Side Includes)-enabled web page.

Put your HTML snippets in the box and click on Save. You can find an example below:

cg1

Now you need to access cPanel > File Manager > public_html and create .shtm or .shtml file

cg2

Once created, open the file and paste the aforementioned tag in it

cg3

For example we added a fixed plain text to highlight the random html snippets on the page.
Now we open http://yourdomain.com/cgi.shtml and refresh the page few times. We can see different results:

Counter

In this menu you can create Clock or Date box to display on your website
(Counter functionality might not be working correctly on our shared servers)

cg5.0

Check on Preview and if everything looks alright click on html and copy the code into your html file

cg5.2

Once copied and saved, open the page in the browser to see the script working.

Clock

This utility will create a real-time Java clock for your site

cg6.0

You can add the code you see after clicking Create HTML into your html file.

NOTE: Java application installed on your PC may block the content from untrusted sites, so you may need to confirm the security prompt when accessing the site with such clocks.

Countdown

You can create a display that counts down to a specified date (java)

CGI Email

With this option you can create a simple Contact Form that will send you emails from your website:

1. Click on CGI Email. You will be redirected to the user guide and in the meantime cPanel will automatically create two important files in cgi-bin folder – cgiecho and cgiemail.

2. Create an email template in your public_html folder, for example lets create email.txt

cg8.1

From: should be local email address – the one created in cPanel
(with your domain using our hosting mail service), otherwise, the server will reject the email in order to prevent spamming activitiy.

To: can be any address you want to receive these emails to and reply from.

Values in brackets will be pulled from the form visitor submits.

3. Create your html page:

cg8

Here you can change questions and Input values (do not forget to change them in your email.txt as well).

If you change the action url
from http://yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/cgiemail/email.txt
to http://yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/cgiecho/test.txt

the email will not be sent, but you will see if the submission is successful – so-called debug (test) mode.

FormMail Clone

FormMail Clone is a clone of Matt Wright’s FormMail.
This option unfortunately is no longer supported on our servers

Entropy Search

This script enables a nice, quick search engine that can help your visitors find information that they are interested in more easily

cg9

Click on Rebuilt the Search Index and wait for it to complete.

Once done, access Setup Search Engine menu, copy the html code and add it to your page.

NOTE: This search engine searches all of the ASCII (text) files on your site. This includes HTML, PERL, plain text files, etc. Since there is no way to limit the search engine, if any of these files contain sensitive information, either encrypt the files or remove them from your site.

Entropy Banners

With this option you can create rotating banners that will randomly appear on your website

cg10

First you need to upload banners > click on Add Banners > browse to the files in question and click Upload.

NOTE: You might need to crop the banners to the specific resolution prior to uploading

cg101

Once done, access Modify Rotation menu and adjust the settings – set the priority and path to the local file/URL the user will be directed to when clicked (can be either local (/index.html) or remote (http://domain.com/page1))

cg111

This is it!
